Argentinian poet Juan Gelman receives Cervantes medal prize

The poet Juan Gelman is the fourth Argentinian who receives the Cervantes Prize, which was delivered this Wednesday in Alcala de Henares, Spain.

APN (Achacachi Post News).- Argentinian poet Juan Gelman received today Wednesday Cervantes medal prize for Literature from the hands of King Juan Carlos.

The Cervantes, is considered the most prestigious Prize of the letters in Spanish.

Gelman, said that he considers poetry a necessity and focused his speech on the works of Miguel de Cervantes, whose death is commemorated today, Day Book.

"Today I celebrate again Spain committed to rescue its historical memory, the only way to build a civic conscience to the future," Gelman said in his speech.

The award ceremony, with just over 143,000 USD was conducted in a traditional event at the Auditorium of the University of Alcala de Henares, the town where he was born author of "Don Quixote".

Gelman's life has not been easy. During the argentinian military dictatorship (1976-1983), lost his son, who disappeared after being arrested with his wife, just the year 2000 he found the daughter of both, Macarena, born in captivity.

The Cervantes was delivered for the first time in 1976 the poet Jorge Guillen and among other winners are the Colombian Alvaro Mutis, the Chilean Jorge Edwards, the Cuban Guillermo Cabrera Infante, the Peruvian Mario Vargas Llosa and Spaniards Francisco Umbral, Jose Hierro, Camilo Jose Cela, Francisco Ayala and Miguel Delibes.

The ceremony was attended by various personalities from the worlds of politics and culture, including the minister of Culture, Cesar Antonio Munoz Molina.
