A nourished march opens IV Social Forum in Asunción

SOCIAL FORUM • A massive march opens "IV Social Forum of the Americas" in Asuncion. It was estimated that some 10,000 social activists marched from km 4.5 of Eusebio Ayala Av. to the Mayor House (Cabildo).

ASUNCION, Paraguay . — A massive march began around 16:30 after a press conference by the Guatemalan Nobel Peace Prize (1992) Rigoberta Menchu, the leading figure of the day.

The fourth Social Forum brings together leaders and representatives of more than 500 organizations advocating for social groups in Paraguay and 17 other countries in the region.

The Forum advocates for peasant, indigenous, feminist, labor and environmentalists demands and against discrimination of all kinds.

The main activity will be held on Saturday announcing the presence of the presidents of Paraguay and Bolivia, Fernando Lugo and Juan Evo Morales Ayma, respectively.

They will give a speech on "Sovereignty and Integration: Our America is underway."

The forum is funded by the entrances to the Itaipu hydroelectric plant.

The entire program will be held in the facilities of the National Sports Council and the Higher Institute of Education (ISE) where delegations also be housed.
